Lihue Airport serves the Hawaiian island of Kauai, a popular vacation destination for people all over the world. Although the airport is rather small, it provides the easiest way for travelers to reach the island.
Renting a car at Lihue Airport gives you an opportunity to explore some of the most exciting attractions in the southeastern section of Kauai.
Ahukini Recreational Pier State Park is located two miles northeast from Lihue Airport. If a long flight has you anxious to reconnect with the ground, this is a great place to have your first experience of the Kauai's natural wonder. In addition to giving you a wonderful view of Hanama'ulu Bay, you can fish and catch crab from the pier.
The Wailua River is the only navigable river in the state, so Wailua River State Park attracts a lot of people who enjoy kayaking and canoeing. Boat tours offer a safe way to view the park's surrounding rain forest. While visiting Wailua River State Park, head to the Wailua Complex of Heiau. This National Historic Landmark holds the remains of the kingdom that once ruled Kauai.
Kauai has a lot of waterfalls. Many of them, however, are difficult to reach without a trained guide. Opaeka'a Falls is a stunning exception that lets you enjoy the beauty of this Hawaiian island. The waterfall drops about 151 feet into an unseen pool in the rain forest's bed.
To reach Opaeka'a Falls from Lihue Airport, drive north on HI-51 until it turns into HI-56. Turn left onto Kuamoo Road and follow the signs to the waterfall. Once you reach the trailhead, walk about two miles until you find the waterfall.
The Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve protects more than 12,500 acres of public land and watershed areas. It plays such an important role in the island's ecosystem that it has been protected since 1909.
The forest's lower region has a wide range of exotic vegetation. It's a large reserve, so you should learn about its hiking trails before you visit.
The Huleia Valley has breathtaking scenery that you must see while visiting Kauai. The river that cuts through the valley provides opportunities for kayaking. If you plan to hike, then you should bring sturdy shoes intended for difficult trails. The footpaths in Huleia Valley tend to get wet, which can make walking difficult for inexperienced hikers.
The area around Lihue Airport has plenty of attractions to visit. When you rent a car, you can see them all during your stay on Kauai.
